For the love of quilts! A day steeped in hands-on quilt lore with Briscoe Center Quilt curator Kate Adams, author of the forthcoming book, Comfort and Glory: Two Centuries of Quilts at the Briscoe Center. Following coffee at Briscoe Center in Austin, the winner of this item and her or his guests will move to Kate’s office for a very special quilt turning. The group will have an opportunity to see, touch (with gloves on!), and learn about several masterpiece and historically important quilts in the Winedale Quilt Collection. Quilts on view will include the extraordinary Chintz Applique Album (1844); the unique Lone Star, made in Texas in 1858; a heavily embellished Crazy Quilt (ca. 1880s); the rare Mexican War Commemorative Comforter (ca. 1848), which Miss Ima Hogg donated to Winedale in 1967; and the improvisational Troutman Quilt (ca. 1851–1877), a creation of a Georgia woman known as the Betsy Ross of Texas. The auction winner is invited to talk or meet with Kate sometime before the quilt turning to name other quilts or quilt types she/he is especially interested in seeing. Includes lunch with Kate afterward and a complimentary signed copy of the aforementioned book, to be published by the University of Texas Press in late summer 2016. A rare opportunity!
